Local residents, some long gone, tell us in their own words about their lives as children and we hear childhood recollections of schooldays, strangely enough education doesn’t fly to the top of their minds in most cases. Walk, catch a bus, get a lift on a tractor, ride a bike and race home – anything to get there and get away again.

Did they behave themselves? No, not very often, not all day. William Hillman was expelled when he was six for pushing his teacher’s dog out of a first floor window. His reaction, “Well, I’d hardly started”. Lots of punishments were received, although they didn’t seem to make much difference.
Today’s children wouldn’t recognise the lessons. We hear about gardening lessons attended by pupils who were working on commercial market gardens after school. Many had to work either before or after the school day to supplement the family income.
Altogether this is an interesting read and a valuable insight into the social history of the last century in Calstock Parish. Make up your own mind – were their times better or worse than ours?
