OUR HISTORY
Calstock Parish Archive was created in 1985 as the result of a Job Creation scheme (MSC) which was set up by Calstock Town Community Council to provide work for a number of people in an area of post-industrial depression. The collection was safeguarded and enlarged by The Calstock Parish Archive Trust, registering as a Charity in 1999. The trust was set up to provide a facility to collect, store and catalogue documents and photographs and preserve them for the benefit of people wishing to study or research our local history. Shared accommodation at Calstock Village Hall became inadequate for working on the expanding collections, so the Archive moved to a dedicated room in the Tamar Valley Visitor Centre at Drakewalls in 2009.
Continued steady expansion of the Archive collections meant that it was increasingly urgent to find more space in which to properly care for and research them. In 2012 the Calstock Parish Council found that there was insufficient demand to justify keeping the nearby Albaston Cemetery Chapel open and sought alternative uses for the building. Our proposal to use the building was considered the best option, so a scheme was developed in conjunction with Calstock Parish Council.
