Jill Lane tells the story of the many shops in Calstock and the families who ran them from the mid-19th century when Calstock  was a busy river port with barges taking away granite and bricks and bringing in timber, coal and limestone.  Pleasure boats came up from Plymouth, offloading passengers for cream teas.  Calstock was a bustling town in those days and the book takes the reader along the streets telling of all the shops there were in the 19th century and into the 20th.
Jill gives the reader an insight into some of the well known shopkeepers such as the Bowden and Bickle families and of course Sid Geake, the midnight baker, who is still remembered by some of the older residents of Calstock.  Her book contains a lot of fascinating information she has discovered.  Illustrated by over 50 photographs from Calstock Parish Archive.
