Here we have extracts from the interviews of about seventy people who grew up in Calstock Parish. Over seventy pages of stories which make us realise the difference the years have made to such everyday things as sanitation, education, health and leisure.
Want a bike? Make your own or walk. Pocket money? Get a job. Before school, after school, sometimes instead of school. Pick flowers, deliver milk, paper rounds, clean the boots and shoes, scrub the steps, fetch the water and always respect your elders, also don’t always expect the money either. And, of course, eat what you were given, often silently in the earlier interviews. Go to the doctor and all come out with the same medicine, have the school dentist, who petrified everyone and if all else failed you had your mother to put bread poultice on your boils, which no one gets now!
These childhoods are brought to life in this publication as they tell us their stories in their own words, spanning about eighty years. A book sure to evoke memories, good and bad!
Cost: £10.00 + £1.50 P&P
