How fortunate that Ron Dingle decided to record his childhood, combined with stories he had been told as a boy, bringing to life characters and places from Calstock parish in the Tamar valley. Inspired as a boy of twelve by “Lorna Doone” he began to note his own surroundings and the result is a unique record of life as seen through a child’s eyes.
Visits to “Granny Maunder” in her basic cottage at Danescombe, walking through woods at Cotehele, memories of acres of market gardening, the air heavy laden with the scent of fruit and flowers. The excitement of waiting to see a vehicle pass along the A390. The Trewartha family joining them for Christmas suppers and celebrations.
Sid Geake the baker and his horse, delivering bread from Calstock on his round. Terrifying days having to pass the road men with their “Tar machine” on the way to Harrowbarrow school and innocently playing in the Arsenic from the works at Coombe. Walking to Calstock at 4am sunrise to catch a Steamer to Plymouth with the woven peck baskets full of produce for the markets and the return journey, tired, with everyone singing Cornish songs on the way.
All this recorded with beautiful coloured illustrations in this 80 page A4 book which the Archive has put together. A joy to read for anyone with families from this area.
Cost: £10.00 + £1.50 P&P
