Gunnislake is the largest, but not the oldest, settlement in Calstock Parish.  Gunnislake only developed in the 19th century as the result of the mining boom.  It was initially called Williams Town, named after the Lord of the Manor of Calstock.
In the 1841 census there were very few trades people in Gunnislake, but in the 1850s there were around 25 businesses and by the 1870s it had grown to 46.  Sadly by the early 20th century, mines, quarries and brickworks began to close down causing much poverty.  This, combined with the increase in supermarkets, led to the demise of most of the shops in Gunnislake
