This book was originally written in 1955 by Alfred Pengelly who spent all his life in Calstock. It was reprinted in facsimile form in April 2005. The book is illustrated, showing the viaduct in construction and the regatta.

In the book he tells of his boyhood memories of Calstock. He talks of the river traffic on the Tamar, both about the barges and their cargoes and about the pleasure steamers. Several boats were built at the boatyard of James Goss situated on the Devon bank opposite Calstock. There were regattas every year, a tradition which is still carried on today.
