Another book written by Jill Lane, this time she turns her attention to Drakewalls, St Ann’s Chapel and Albaston where there were a surprising number of shops in the 19th and early 20th century. She gives an insight into the various families who ran the shops and businesses, notably the Bowhays who owned several pubs, a brewery, a tannery and several acres of land. There was also Alfred Broad who was a tailor, outfitter, cycle agent, paper hanger and an ironmonger who sold books and shoes. He was Clerk to Calstock Parish Council for many years and at one time Worshipful Master of Cotehele Lodge.
Businesses included Kimberly Jam Makers, garages, Delaware Plastic Products Ltd (the plastic pants factory) and Drakewalls Mine.
With over 100 photographs and information gleaned from the newspaper archive, census and trade directories, this book makes a fascinating insight into this busy area in days gone by.
