THE EARLY HISTORY
OF
CALSTOCK PARISH
by Patrick E. Coleman
OF
CALSTOCK PARISH
by Patrick E. Coleman
First published in 1997, this booklet was the natural
consequence of the research which was undertaken for the booklet
on the place names of the parish. As soon as place names are
studied, certain facts begin to emerge about the pattern of
their history. However, even more questions also begin to pose
themselves. In the booklet an attempt is made to answer
these, and to build them up into a pattern of the parish's
history from the end of the last Ice Age until Mediaeval times.

The Place Names of Calstock Parish
Patrick E. Coleman
Patrick E. Coleman
This booklet attempts to discover the earliest mention
of the main place names of Calstock Parish, to explain how they
developed and what they probably mean. There are 65 entries.
The Calstock Parish Archives, held in Calstock Village Hall, were used quite extensively, as they go back as far as the 1300's and have proved to be invaluable. Many of the original records are on rolls of parchment kept in the Duchy Record Office in London. Thus reference is often made to Court Rolls, Assession Rolls etc as the source of any early mention.

The Inside Story of Calstock
Alfred Pengelly
Alfred Pengelly
This book was originally written in 1955 by Alfred Pengelly who spent all his life in Calstock. It was reprinted in facsimile form in April 2005.
In the book he tells of his boyhood memories of Calstock. He talks of the river traffic on the Tamar, both about the barges and their cargoes and about the pleasure steamers. Several boats were built at the boatyard of James Goss situated on the Devon bank opposite Calstock. There were regattas every year, a tradition which is still carried on today.
The book is illustrated, showing the viaduct in construction and the regatta.
